Despite being three years old, GTA Online is updated with new cars and weapons every month. Maybe you want to jump in for the first time, or are coming back from a break. Whatever the reason, here are some pointers for getting up and running in GTA Online.
Grab GTA V bundled with a Shark Card when it goes on sale
If you don’t have the game yet, patience is a virtue. In this case, going in with a Shark Card will give you some extra in-game money that can make a big difference. In GTA Online, cash is king, and starting with an extra million or two in your bank account will help you buy expensive new weapons and cars.

Play some single player
The story portion of GTA V will teach you some of the basics you need to survive in GTA Online, without any assholes, trolls, or fear of constant death.

If you have friends, bring them along
While it’s possible to play GTA Online by yourself, that’s not the best experience: friends make everything better, after all. I have fond memories of pals getting run over by a car, accidentally pissing off a cop, and other shenanigans that made GTA Online more fun and entertaining. Highly recommended.

Personalize your character
Once you’ve finished up the first tutorial missions and objectives, go rob some convenience stores and use some of your hard earned cash to buy new clothes for your character. Personalizing your character will help you feel connected to their journey from random thug to criminal mastermind. It helps that GTA Online has some incredible threads for you to try on.

Do contact missions
Contact missions are like standard GTA missions, but they separate you from the other players in the free roam session. This means you can focus on the objective without worrying about some random asshole killing you with a jet. Contact missions can be a fun way to make money, as they pay out extra cash for new players.
Contact missions are offered to you randomly via the in-game phone, but you can find them in the pause menu under Jobs as well. Just host a job and select “Rockstar Created,” where you’ll be able to play any contact mission. If you can invite a higher level friend, set these missions to hard. You get more cash and RP.

Take advantage of events
Rockstar is always doing weekly events for GTA Online. Keep an eye on the Rockstar Twitter account or Rockstar’s Newswire blog to know when things are hitting. These events can vary in quality, but many of them give players ways to make extra cash and experience. Events also bring weekly discounts to GTA Online, so if you want a new supercar or house, it pays to wait.

Keep an eye out for the double RP and double $ stunt races in particular, which dole out TONS of money even if you don’t win.
Check out the new stunt races
If you haven’t played GTA Online in a while, you need to try the wild new stunt races, as they are filled with huge jumps and crazy loops. Not only do these pay out well, they are a great way to earn more wins (and thus a good way to unlock new parts for custom cars.)
To help you find these races, check out these playlists: you can race up a skyscraper, drive the powerful new rocket car, or jump around in the Ruiner 2000.
Play some adversary modes
There’s a mode that allows you to live out your TRON lightcycle fantasies, a tense stealth mode that feels inspired by Manhunt and a mode that recreates the Terminator 2 semi-truck chasing a bike scene.

Don’t waste your money
When you first start out, it might seem like everyone is running around with fancy sportscars, but that doesn’t mean you need to buy flashy and pricey stuff that you don’t actually need. Like the real world, it pays to save!
Don’t buy an apartment right away
Save your money for larger homes that allow you to start heists. Once you do have enough money for a bigger house, do some research. It might seem silly, but you should drive around any prospective property first. Questions to ask yourself: does the locale seem busy? Is it near anything useful, like an Ammu-nation or a CEO Office? Note that such amenities will likely also attract other players, which can be dangerous.
Don’t buy a garage right away
Cars are some of the biggest symbols of status and wealth in GTA Online, but you shouldn’t worry about such appearances at first. Garages might seem cheap when compared to houses, but you probably won’t use them for a good while. Wait until you’ve filled up the garage that your house or apartment comes with before purchasing a separate garage.

Wait for sales
Rockstar has new items for sale nearly every week. Early on in GTA Online money can be really hard to come by, so saving a few hundred thousand dollars whenever you can is a good move.
Don’t buy every gun in the store
Whenever a new gun is released, I tend to buy it and try it out. Don’t be like me. These new guns rarely replace my favorites. Once you find an assault rifle or pistol you like, just stick with it. Eventually you will have enough money to afford everything, but you shouldn’t sweat it early on.

Leave the CEO and Biker stuff for later
Becoming a CEO or the leader of a biker gang is expensive. On top of that, this chunk of content has its own gameplay mechanics and systems that would be overwhelming to new players.
Avoid heists until you are confident in your skills
Heists are an exciting way to make cash, but they can also be frustrating and time consuming if you’re not careful. You should try heists with friends, if possible, and only after you learn how to survive during longer firefights. You should also wait until you’ve leveled up enough to withstand more damage, and have a good selection of weapons and bulletproof vests.
If you play with random players, use a headset, but try not to be a jerk. Heists are all about coordinating with other players. Plus some of the longer car rides can be boring, so having some folks to joke around with can help ease the tension and pass the time quicker.
Don’t grind for cash, just have fun
When I first started playing GTA Online I spent hours grinding an easy mission that awarded good money.. but after 3 days, I started hated myself for it. Now I only play what I like. Sure, it means I’m not the richest person in GTA Online, but I don’t mind. Now I’m actually having fun.
While money is important in GTA Online, you can still have a blast without spending much. You can start most jobs and races for free, so don’t stress too much about grinding to make millions. As they say, the best things in life are free.

Use the interaction menu
It’s useful. To use this menu, hold down the PS4 touchpad, or the Xbox One view button, or M on PC. Through the interaction menu, you can store bulletproof vests, set your GPS quickly, change your outfit, split cash among your crew, and purchase ammo (though it does cost a little more.) That’s the price of convenience.
Use passive mode
Another useful feature in the interaction menu is passive mode. Passive mode allows anyone to become nearly immortal and avoid other players’ bullets and cars. If someone just won’t stop killing you over and over, go passive. They might send you an angry message or call you a coward, but don’t worry about it. Passive is also a great way to avoid trouble if you want to get a haircut or check out a new car you just bought. If you need a break from all the killing and destruction, passive mode is always an option.

Take cover
Walls allow you take cover and avoid enemy gunfire, which is useful. You can also take advantage of an exploit while in cover. Normally, when you are low on health, you can eat something—but this requires sitting through a 10 second animation. While in cover, you instantly regain health while eating food instead.

Consider buying a Shark Card
Some GTA Online players might hate this tip, but there’s nothing wrong with buying Shark Cards if you need them. You might be busy, or you might not be able to devote days to catching up in GTA Online. Maybe you want a cool car, a nice house, or some fancy clothes. Shark Cards speed up the process, though they’re not actually necessary to enjoy GTA Online.

Explore, relax and chill
GTA Online can sometimes feel like a job. If you grind too much or focus only on making lots of cash it can quickly become boring or frustrating. So make sure that you have some time dedicated to just chilling. Go mess with the unstoppable train, try to find the jetpack, explore the desert with a dirt bike, find a boat and cruise the ocean. Listen to some music. Don’t worry about that player flying nearby in a jet; they probably won’t attack you.

The Problem
An increasingly common misconception among GTA Online players is that getting money dropped on you by hackers will result in your account being banned. The ban resulting from the sudden increase of cash you're carrying around. However, there are a number of ways to minimize any sort of harm that hackers may inflict upon you when and if this occurs. We've put together a hacker avoidance guide before, but that touched on different topics than this guide.
Dropped Money ≠ Ban
First of all, getting money dropped on you won't get you banned, and it has never caused false bans. Another misconception is that whether or not you bank the cash actually matters. Some claim banking it will save you from a ban, others that banking it is what causes the ban. Neither are true, because banking the cash makes no difference whatever which way. You're not getting banned for this, period.
Avoid Hackers and Switch Lobbies
One more thing before we proceed: the quickest, safest and overall best way to avoid issues caused by hackers is to simply hop to a different lobby. No method beats this right now. Even though a recent upgrade to the in-game anti-cheat allows for the mid-session banning of hackers, reporting someone won't insta-ban them since that system would be open to abuseby trolls and griefers, especially considering that absolutely every ban is non-negotiable.
However, if for whatever reason you decide to risk it all and stay in a lobby with a hacker, there are some precautions to take. Again, we'd just suggest switching sessions, but hey, some of you folk are off your axels. Sometimes you might meet someone who is a 'nice hacker', someone who doesn't crash the lobby with the spawning of infinite Titans, or doesn't take all your guns away from you.
Nice Hackers Don't Exist
First of all, there are no 'nice hackers'. They might not be screwy right now but you can bet that they cocked up other lobbies for kicks before, and will do so again. Any and all forms of hacking are in breach of GTA Online's EULA and ToS, and bans are issued in these cases.
Don't Enter the Vehicle
Now, while dropping cash on you won't result in the banhammer descending upon you, hackers can get you banned in other ways. A golden rule is never, ever to get into a car with a hacker. A number of hack effects, like god mode, are transferrable this way, meaning if you hop into a car with an invincible player, you'll be invincible too. But without any of the anti-ban precautions these hackers have set up you'll probably tick off the anti-cheat within seconds.
God mode isn't the only effect that is transferrable this way, but all of them will get you banned. The thing with hacking is that for all the masking techniques out there, none are fool-proof and even the best can only buy you time before you're banned. If any of you think it's a great idea to set up a mask of some sort and hop into a hacker's car as an easy way to get an unfair advantage, be warned that you're just signing the death sentence of your account.
Losing Your Weapons and Ammo
A common thing to experience is having all of your weapons taken from you by hackers. This particular problem is quickly resolved with a single loading screen, like going to your apartment or something. However, you'll reinitialize without any ammo, even though your weapons are back. Not only does this mean that your carefully cherished firework rockets are adiós, but you can waste a bunch of cash on buying it back.
Gta 5 Apartments
We risk repeating ourselves, but here, session hopping is your best best. Even if you're stuck it out with the hackers up to this point, unless you want to waste hard earned money on ammo you never fired, switch sessions as quickly as possible. Dallying too much will make the issue 'set', but if you're swift you'll load into the new lobby with all of your weapons and ammo on you.
Beat the Titan Spawners
Evidence for this next tip is anecdotal at best, but hey, if it works for just one guy out of ten, it's still helping (and with the number of players playing GTA Online, one out of ten is still almost a million a week). When a hacker begins to crash the lobby with infinite prop spawning, turn your in-game field of view to the ground as quickly as possible and try to switch session before it boots you out.
The idea is that even though the props will exist within the game world, the hardware will be less taxed - this can even be tested on mid-range PCs ambiently. Have an FPS counter on, look out into the distance so many objects need to be rendered. Then look down right at the ground, and you'll get significantly better framerates due to the fewer objects.
Sometimes, hackers will spawn props into your character model that persist after several lobby switches. In these cases, a full reboot of the system is suggested, though simply switching to singleplayer then back to multiplayer also works most of the time. We have yet to hear of this causing a ban. However there is a likelihood of having an altered player model trip the anti-cheat, so for your safety we'd suggest rebooting your system entirely.
Avoid Their Gear
Another way to avoid bans is to not interact with hacker-spawned vehicles or other items. Occasionally you'll meet an alleged 'nice hacker' who spawns a dozen Duke O'Deaths into the lobby for players to have fun with. Except the hack is kind of like a virus that spreads from carseats. Like sharing a car with a hacker, sitting in a hacked car is like painting a target on your colluding ass.
Don't Beg
Speaking of collusion, there is one thing that is rarely spoken of but does cause bans. See, people can't only report hackers, but people who outright ask for cash. Chat-log screencaps of you polishing gizzard for easy money (since money drops don't cause bans) are all Rockstar Support needs to let loose the dogs of ban to feast upon your greedy shins.
Stay Informed
If you've possibly, even inadvertently, done anything stated above to put you at risk of a ban but haven't been banned yet (and are actually, genuinely innocent), we'd suggest keeping an eye on the forums. Usually whenever there is a banwave, pissed hackers whine about it in drove so they are hard to miss. Ban waves themselves come in smaller sub-waves, and if you're not caught by the first, staying offline for a while might save your account.
Final Thoughts
That said, none of this is a guarantee. For your own safety, just burn the lobby-hopping suggestion into your mind and use it as your go-to method for hacker avoidance. If you're ever in a situation where you're tempted to stay in a lobby with a hacker, just ask yourself whether risking your account, and all progress on it, is worth it all.

In GTA Online, money is all that matters.
Gta Online Best Apartment 2019Intro
Once you've grinded all the RP you can and unlocked everything there is to offer at level 120 (technically 135 if you want to store 10 armor) the only other resource that you'll need to progress further is cash. In GTA Online, $GTA is the means to everything, including more money.
So naturally, 'What is the best and fastest way to make money in GTA Online?' is one of the community's evergreen questions that is asked time and time again.
As GTA Online is constantly expanded with DLC, the top money-making tactics also change. There was a time when each subsequent new update would bring with it the most lucrative new content, however for almost a year now the top activities have remained unchanged. While new DLC usually brings strong monkey making contenders, GTA Online players demand efficiency, and the GTA$/hour ratio of the other activities remained superior.
While even among the top three there will be one that is better than the others, and repeating it on end might seem like the most efficient approach, we suggest alternating at least between these three we are about to describe.
Some methods do not require constant attention due to cooldowns, and in your free time you're able to pursue the other methods concurrently, thus making more profit than being a purist. Secondly, this is still a game where the main goal is to have fun and endless repetition that ain't.
Running Crates
In spite of being the first content update to feature a business, the Further Adventures in Finance and Felony DLC's influence can be still felt today. It seems to mark the beginning of a new era of GTA Online (arguably Executives and Other Criminals could also be that point, but Finance and Felony is the clear cut 'moment of change') defined by a cycle of major updates each packing a new form of money making based on the same principle, along with intermittent smaller updates.
Finance and Felony (Guide 1 | Guide 2) created the archetype of the supply-store-sell business format in GTA Online, which has been the basis of all new money making activities since.
You run missions to acquire goods to sell, put them in a warehouse where they sit for a while, then you run missions to sell those goods.
This consisted of supplying contraband for your warehouse in Finance and Felony, filling up your gauge either by purchasing supplies or stealing them, and then finally going on a sell mission to exchange your valuable crates for cash. Sometimes you'd get Special Cargo, which are higher value crates with fantastic payouts.
Back when the update launched, running crates dethroned Heists (arguably) as the go-to money making tactic since it could be done alone (feasibly). The biggest issue with running crates was, and still is, the high amount of griefers in the game. Jackasses with Hydras were always more of a threat than the NPC enemies the game threw your way.
This led to the 'invention' of the perfect crate shipping method - the solo public lobby. Crate missions are only available in public lobbies, so the best method to get money out of this was to lag out into a public lobby where you're alone. The exact method varies between systems, but you can read about them here.
To this day, players who can put together an efficient crate running schedule will make tons of cash off Finance and Felony's business (around $GTA 150K to $GTA$ 220K per hour), and a lot more than with most other methods.
Importing and Exporting Cars
Finance and Felony's règne suprême lasted until the December of 2016, when Import/Export was released.
It operated on the same 'get thing, put in warehouse, twiddle thumbs, sell' principle, except this time the 'thing' wasn't highly illegal contraband, but stolen cars. This was the DLC that but 'grand theft auto' back into Grand Theft Auto Online.
Import/Export, by default, didn't even have a better GTA$/hour than running crates did due to a slew of cooldowns, but players found two ways to squeeze more cash out of the mode. When you begin a sourcing mission in Import/Export, you don't know what car you'll have to steal, and some vehicles are worth a lot more than others. Completing the mission triggers a cooldown that needs to pass before you can source another vehicle.
If players switch lobbies mid-sourcing, the mission would cancel without the cooldown triggering. Using this method, players can hoard just the most expensive model of car, so when time came to sell, they get more cash for their time investment.
The other way to get more cash out of the method is with collections. Selling specific shopping lists of cars nets you a bonus over just selling random cars together. That said, the collections themselves don't give too much of a boost, except when the two methods are combined.
Players can use the lobby hopping to bypass the cooldown in order to collect the collection which consisted of the most expensive vehicles. With the time spared on cooldowns and the collection bonus, a clever car thief is able to make a lot more cash than enterprising shady CEOs do (around $GTA 200K to $GTA 240K per hour).
Check out our Import/Export guide here.
Farming The Doomsday Heist
While Heists should be part of your money making tactics anyhow, the more difficult yet more rewarding heists added to the game with The Doomsday Heist DLC can straight up replace them. With the two space-ranger weapons added in a weekly update, with their overpowered damage and high fire rate, as well as the lack of reloading, even the end-game difficulty of these harder missions become easy as long as you play smart and communicate with your team. Replace those Pac-Stan runs with The Doomsday Heist and you'll be making more GTA$ with the same, or less, effort.
Keep An Eye On The Weekly Bonuses
While often we get weekly bonuses doubling the payouts of Adversary Modes, which still amount to less income than most of these methods, we also often see double rewards promos and +50% payout promos on some of the most lucrative activities in the game. While double reward heists are extremely rare, getting double GTA$ for Bikers, Gunrunning or Smuggler's Run sell missions happen quite frequently. Occasionally we also see discounts on sourcing special cargo, or double rewards for Import/Export sell missions, which we already outlined earlier. While you can't really plan on these, every other week or so has a decent promotion and making the most of them can vastly increase your character's funds.
Buy The Nightclub And The Warehouse
This particular method is double-sided. On the one hand, you have the less important aspect - the Nightclub itself. Introduced in the After Hours DLC, Nightclubs offer a way to earn passive income without any effort, which you can increase if you wish with upgrades and the occasional popularity mission. This will boost the passive income, but even at its maximum it isn't a large figure - but hey, free cash! It adds up over time, so it's worth hopping over to your Nightclub safe every now and then to take out the money.
However, on the other hand you have the absolute game changer - the Nightclub warehouse. This ties into our next suggestion, so read on.
Check out our After Hours guide here.
Multitasking
This money-making method won't give its significant bonuses with ease and requires a lot of planning to pull off well.
If you put your mind to doing a bit of math, you can juggle the cooldowns of the various businesses in GTA Online, as well as other missions, to put together a maximum efficiency schedule of missions for the greatest possible amount of cash.
The original version of this method was described using a combination of crates, Bikers businesses (which on their own aren't too lucrative) and two VIP missions ('Sightseer' and 'Hostile Takeover LSIA'), but the same method can be adapted to switch out crates with vehicle imports and exports.
Though the scheduling will be a bit different with export missions and will thus require additional calculations, the original formula with crates had a mixture of cooldowns almost perfectly synched, which would see you hop from sourcing as a CEO, to doing VIP missions, to sourcing as an MC, then back to selling as a CEO, VIP missions again and finally selling as an MC with basically zero downtime and constant cash flow.
When combined with the solo public lobby method for stress-free CEO work or exporting, this is the single most efficient money making tactic in the game.
Neither Gunrunning nor Smuggler's Run provide businesses with better GTA$/hour ratios, though they are quite close. If you put your mind to it, it may be possible to calculate a new hybrid method using one or both of those for an even better way, but so far, it has not been discovered.
The newest version of this particular method relies greatly on the Nightclub Warehouse. Basically the Nightclub Warehouse centralizes all of your businesses, allowing you to source, produce and start sell missions for all of them - including CEO work, Bikers businesses, Import/Export, Gunrunning and Smuggling. This streamlines the process significantly, cutting out travel time and all the faffing around with your pipeline.
The biggest bonus howere are the technicians. The Nightclub Warehouse comes with one technician by default, but you can buy additional ones. Technicians create supplies to be sold on their own, for free. It takes time, but this greatly increases your profit margins on all sell missions, since there is significantly less investment involved. With Business Battles, you can earn additional supplies in a much easier way than traditional sourcing, further boosting your GTA$ earnings.
Under most of our headings above, you will find more detailed guides that expand on each method and that should clear up any confusion left over about how to rack up millions in GTA Online. If you want a comprehensive, all-encompassing look, check out our full collection of guides relating to all things GTA 5 (and GTA Online) right here.
Heists will finally be coming to GTA Online starting Tuesday (March 10), so we want to make sure you are ready for one of the most-anticipated features in gaming. Heists won't be as easy as accepting a new mission though, so here's what you will need to do first so you can start robbing banks as soon as possible.
If you just want the quick run-down of what you need to do, here you go. I'll explain each step further below if you are confused.
This role is arguably the most important role in any heist. The Heist Leader is a player who decides he or she wants to run their own heist mission. To do this, players must be level 12 or higher and own a high-end apartment with a planning board. From here, the Heist Leader gets to decide what heist to tackle, what players will take on each role, and how much of the final cut each player will take in. Heist progress is only saved with the Heist Leader, so make sure you follow a trusted Leader into battle.
Apartments
The Heist Leader will need a high-end apartment in order to organize a heist. Thanks to the GTA Wiki, we now have a full list of all of the high-end apartments, where they are located, and how much each one costs.
While you don't get to do what you want on a heist, you should cater to a set of special skills. If you want to be the pilot, start pumping up your flying stats. If you want to be the sniper/lookout, get your shooting stats going. The Heist Leader will still get to ultimately decide your role, but at least you can make compelling arguments for your preferred positions. Also, all players including the Heist Leader will not be given special gear or vehicles to perform heists. This means that you may want to stock up on a variety of items like silenced guns, big trucks, smaller cars, melee weapons, and everything else to cover all of your bases. The Heists update will include new gear to unlock, but having some equipment beforehand is going to really help.
Rockstar stressed the importance for all players to be wearing a headset while playing Heists. This is to ensure active communication between all players involved. Communication will be key to performing a successful heist with timing and coordination of movements being crucial to certain tasks. Make sure you're wired up and ready to go.
Rockstar also detailed additional awards that players can win by participating in Heist missions. Each Heist will have a series of Elite Challenges. These harder challenges will ultimately result in a bigger cash reward upon completion, but they can be incredibly difficult. There are also a series of one-time challenges that players can earn. These are as follows:
So to get the absolute most money you can in GTA Online Heists, you need to do all five heists in order with the same group of friends while not dying and completing all of the Elite Challenges. This will maximize the potential profits you can earn by completing these missions.
So what do you think? Are you and your GTA Online crew going to be ready to take down institutions starting tomorrow, March 10? Which of the five confirmed heists are you most looking forward to? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
